More than Just Looks: What’s Really Behind Sites that Convert

    • Mike Murphy, Vice President of Technology

A beautiful website may be just that if there isn’t the proper infrastructure behind it to convert prospective students. Websites aren’t just about impressive visuals and well-worded headlines. It’s the tools powering the site that will give it what it needs to increase engagement and conversion.

Mike will share how StudentBridge’s powerful tech platform will help you increase the effectiveness of your site with personalization, robust analytics, an easy-to-use CMS, accessibility, security and privacy compliance, CRM integration and more.
He’ll also provide a preview of what’s to come for partners that will continue to propel digital engagement and enrollment initiatives going forward.

Hi, my name is Mike Murphy, I'm the VP of technology at Student Bridge. Today I'm going to talk about what makes Student Bridge's technology and products different, and how they will help you attract and recruit more students. One of our first differentiators is our easy to use CMS. So our CMS is how we allow you to update the content on your student bridge website. We offer very Microsoft Word like editing experience, it's what you see is what you get, or wiziwig, which makes it easy. And we offer built in analytics, which we'll talk about later in this 40 minute program. So first, I want to start off with screencast. To show you just how easy to use the CMS is. This is the interface a school or partner will use in order to edit the content on their video view book or virtual campus experience site. So here, we'll see we have our channels and chapters. Chapters are the essential element of content on a student bridge, video view book. This could be a video, they can be an image gallery, that could be other things that help to tell your story. Channels are collections of chapters. So for instance, if I click on the expand button on the chapter named "Our Solutions" from this website that we use to demo student bridge features, we can see that we have how we can help you chapter and I'm going to click the Edit button for that. Now if I scroll down, we'll see the description. Let's say I want to make a trivial edit, I might want to make Zach's title, bold. So it's just as simple as highlighting the text clicking the bolt B button, and then clicking save. So now if I go back over to this page, and I click on the "How we can help you" chapter, you'll see that Zach's title is bold. Now. Why am I undo that I don't want to make the marketing team to upset with me because I'm messing with their content. So instead, I will make it unbold. Click Save and then view this again. You'll see it's not bold anymore. There are other things in there, I should say. You can also edit-- We have the video transcript for videos, like go back in there and look at how we can help you click on the transcript button. That's the transcript. Maybe there's a viewer that prefers to read about the video, read the content of the video, rather than watch it. We have transcripts there. It's also important for accessibility reasons, as is the closed caption file which you can upload. Closed Captions appear in the bottom third of the video.

    "My name is Zack Chastain".

You see, "Hi, my name is Zack Chastain. I'm the director of partnerships at Student Bridge", just like the closed caption copy. Finally, while you're here, you can also edit the thumbnail. So the thumbnail is what appears below the video. We have here, all the videos in this channel, and they each have a thumbnail. So if you wanted to update that thumbnail image, you could do it through this interface. Finally, and I'm going to cancel this-- You can also edit the title of the chapter. I'm not going to do that now. But it's just as simple as clicking on it, add more text. And then you click the Save button. And that will save.

So that's channels and chapters, we have some other elements, I'm going to switch to a different site to show off maps. So this is another one of our sites. And you'll see we have one map. And if I click edit on it, here's the map inside the CMS. It's actually a map of our office space. And so if I want to click on one of the what do we call hotspots or map pins, we can change the name, we can change the category it belongs to. We-- if this were a video, we would have video URL, we could add a closed caption file to it and a transcript as well. And we can add the text that goes with it. So if I want to go and look at the map in here, at our office, click on that pin. Then I just head up and you see there's the description zooms in on that.

Finally, there's a third element inside CMS and I wanted to demo which is the dashboard. The dashboard is the window into the analytics that we're collecting about this site. So for instance, let's say I wanted to know who's visited [INAUDIBLE] page. I can click on the segmentation long, and I can see that's me. I've clicked all over that site because I've been making the screencast today, but it gives me an idea of who that visitor is masquerading as Katie ball currently. And if you wanted to find out more about a particular URL, take that-- link will take you there and close this I can see how many viewers I can see how long it's been that they their average visit duration. I can see how taken to generate pages page views, all of these good web analytics information. We also learned where the viewer is coming from here. So thank you for viewing my screencast related to the student bridge virtual campus experience CMS also known as the video view book. And I hope to show you another screencast again soon.

The next new feature we've implemented on Student Bridge's Virtual Campus experiences the opportunity to personalize the URL, which you send each student. The page that they'll receive when they visit this URL, greets them by name. And we offer the facility to track the activity and gather additional data about that student through our analytics. So in this next portion, I'd like to show you a screencast that shows you exactly how that works. To do this demo, we'll start in the CMS for one of our viewbook sites. And we'll see when you log in first, when you first log into the CMS, you're presented with channels and chapters viewed but if we scroll down, we'll see this pearl generator tile. Here is where you upload or download files related to personalize your LLC. So I've already downloaded the file, switch to excel. And I accidentally edited that, that's okay. And you'll see this is the the result of downloading that file and it's in a fairly simple file format; email address, first name, last name, a school identifier, which might be you know, NU for Boston University or KSU for kind of stops at university whatever makes sense to your school. And then the Generate personalized URL. And they're always in this format of the URL of the video view book or virtual campus experience site/ PURL/ and then a name that we generate. If there was more than one Zach Chastain, we would have Zach Chastain one, Zach Chastain two, Zach Chastain three and etc. So we only got a couple in for this demo. But the act of uploading the file causes the personalized URLs to be generated. And if we wanted to see all the names that we've put in the system, let me go back and show what I did there better. Click on the three dots with the three lines next to it icon to view the report. And we'll see we someone's visited Katie's personalized URL 13 times I will tell you right now that someone is me, is I've been working to get this screencast on. But if I click on this, I'll click and open a new tab, we'll see that it's taken me to the homepage of this virtual campus experience site. But we're welcoming Katie by name. Now that I've clicked and visited as Katie, or followed the link that was created for Katy, whenever I view other content on the site, it will also continue to welcome you my name, obviously, we can style that and make it work with the partners brand preferences and all those things. And there's little more to it than this though. Besides that feature, which obviously is great. We can also see who's visited it by visiting the report. So see that we've had five pages today. And if I close this window, I can get more information about who's visited purl/ Katie ball. And we'll see mostly is me.

This is my home internet connection here in Marietta, Georgia, you can get into that that kind of insight, you know, beyond just the visit count, which might be the most important thing. If I go back here, and I look again at the list, I can also see what time they visited last, and all that kind of stuff. Now the idea here is, in why would you want to be able to upload and download CSV files? The idea is that we're not providing the facility for sending a mail or sending a text message or even sending a postcard. Through this feature. We're just providing the glue that makes the URLs that you might put in an email or an SMS message, work on the website. And then what we envision how we envision this working is once you generate the list files, you then take that CSV and you would feed it into your campaign management tool or your CRM in order to send those emails to the students. You might also use the information about visit counts and most recent visits for other things as well. In the future, we plan to introduce features to allow automated integration between this system and students CRM or student SIS's. We're still collecting requirements about exactly how we want to do that. But this is the student bridge personalized URL feature. Thank you for watching.

Student bridge takes accessibility seriously. I think that's an understatement. We know that in order to attract the best students and also just to do the right thing, that the websites that schools offer, show off what you know what's special about your school and need to be accepted. Everyone. So we designed to support accessibility requirements from the beginning, doing accessibility is not easy. We've had the benefit of working with several very knowledgeable partners on accessibility and we strive to continuously improve from an accessibility point of view. Our apps are designed to be mobile first. But also accessibility features are priority features and they're designed in from the beginning. We use the WCAG guidelines to give a solid direction, WCAG 2.0. We're currently designing for WCAG 2.0, Double A, although we have began, including features that speak to that 2.1 and 3.0 draft guidelines, there are a number of important requirements 2.1 that we feel like we satisfied today, including mobile first and tablet orientation, behavior and other things. But we're waiting to redraft our vpat document until WCAG finalizes the 3.0 guidelines. Maps are one of our largest challenges. So ensuring that screen readers or keyboard users can navigate a website that's mostly text and pictures is relatively straightforward. But making an interactive experience like our interactive campus maps for from an accessibility point of view is much more difficult. So in late 2020, we took the decision to completely revamp accessibility on maps, we've taken care to make maps work with the goal of making the accessible experience better. And in particular, to really make it work well for screenreader users who would otherwise not get a lot of benefit from the maps. This is a major challenge, but it feels like something that we've accomplished. In addition, our VisiTour product is designed for a mobile experience. First, it's in the nature of the product that is designed for mobile is designed for use walking around campuses. That doesn't help many users who maybe have mobility challenges or simply can't come visit campus, they're too far away, that's been happening a lot during COVID-19. So we are now working on a revamp of the experience for users and visitors who are coming from further away or using the desktop so that they can benefit from the VisiTour experience as well. So there'll be more news there is that comes together. But I feel like again, that's in the vein of doing the right thing for students to make sure that it works for everybody, while also you know, continuing to improve the product and the core experience there as well.

Security and compliance, so cyber security is a higher priority than ever before. I think we've heard a lot of news headlines today about ransomware and other sorts of attacks about nation state level actors, about just we live in a digital society today. And so obviously there are people that want to do bad things. And they're going to do that through digital channels. So we have to take security and compliance seriously. Student Bridge wants to work with the IT and security departments. For that our partners to make sure that we satisfy their requirements. There are a number of industry standard requirements out there that we're designing for. There are certifications that we can secure that we are continuously exploring. They're not-- We're not actively pursuing something like ISO 27,001. Today, well, we're looking at it for the future. We do maintain a [INAUDIBLE] document. And we are also looking at participation in the new [INAUDIBLE] better risk management initiative. Student Bridge, we follow best practices and our development lifecycle is something I personally have a lot of experience in. So I want to make sure that we do it right. I know the benefits of designing for security from the beginning as opposed to trying to graft it on at the end of the development process. It's a lot harder that way. And we're also including practice security scanning for our software, and intrusion detection and monitoring and our services today so that we can make sure that we build securely, and that we maintain secure infrastructure and can react if a security problem reveals itself. We're also worried about privacy and the security of the data that we collect about students on behalf of our partners. Want to say flat out now that when there are concerns about privacy, we do not share information about students with third parties. We do not share that information collected on behalf of one school with another school. And we make sure that we hold that data securely. We encrypt it in [INAUDIBLE]. We encrypt it in motion. And we're actually rather careful about the nature of the information we collect about students. It would be, obviously, a very big negative experience for our schools, for our partners, and also for the students themselves, if we were to expose their personal information, and so that is a top priority of ours that we not do that, and that we follow the best practices to ensure the remain safe and secure.

Analytics and integration. Just having a virtual campus experience website or just having a VisiTour, that's only part of the solution. That's the part that the student sees. But that's not, you know, inherently just presenting the website doesn't necessarily help a school to gain any insight about whether or not students are viewing it, whether or not that's part of their decision making process, helping you to find the students who are most interested in your school through those solutions. So we offer built in analytics today, you don't need to bring your own analytics tool in order to gain the benefit of website usage, track or website usage reporting from Student Bridge's solutions. We believe that behavioral analytics are a cornerstone for our partner success. It helps you understand which content engages your audiences, it helps you understand what contents working and what's not. We can help you understand that all of these things through the analytics dashboard that we provide. So when you're using a student bridge solution, there's no need to add your own website analytics system, it's already baked in. That said, many schools already have a website analytics solution they use for their other websites, there is we have no problem with integrating your website analytics solution with our solutions. We've already got a stock integration with Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager, for instance. So if you were a Google Analytics user, for your other websites, you can get the data from the Student Bridge website to show up right alongside your.edu site or any of the other online properties that you're presenting today. So you can have it both ways if you need to. And we really want to make sure that the analytics solution delivers the insights that you need in order to make the decisions, improve your online experience, and present your best face to the world, using our products.

Integration is also important to us, analytics isn't the only supporting integration. Besides analytics, we support many other different kinds of integrations, we believe that for you to get the maximum benefit out of Student Bridge's solutions, they need to work well with the rest of your digital tools. So I've put some examples of other tools and systems that we integrate with here on the slide today, like admin hub and olark for chat, Google Analytics, which we spoke about before, and slate or other students CRM's. We can help work together in your complete solution so that you can see, end to end, how prospective students are behaving on your websites, which students may be interested in which ones aren't, where should you invest your time and effort. We can make all that work together, we support several integrations now, kind of out of the box, that we have a deep integration, we've done it several times, or many times before for other schools, they're very common. Google Analytics is a very good example of that. But really, anything any system you have that needs, you know that we need to embed in the pages on our student bridge solution, we can probably do that. We should talk about that during the implementation phase of a new student bridge solution and a new school solution built on student bridge. But I really wanted to emphasize, I think there's a trend in the industry today. There's a lot of edtech companies out there, they're trying to make their own business, it makes sense. They're they're relatively close, they want to make sure that they're not enabling someone else to build a competitor of theirs in the future. We at Student Bridge, we see a different lane. I've worked in other industries before where openness, where integration were very much an emphasis on making systems work together had meant that everyone benefits. And there's plenty of business out there for those-- for companies that do that companies like Salesforce. So what we would like to see is the industry to evolve to more open integration to industry standards for integration, especially in the what we call top of funnel in the marketing space. And we want to be part of the solutions. So if you have something you want to integrate with us, let's talk about it. I'd like to spend the time and the effort and then develop our hours to make sure that that works correctly, because we're going to benefit from that in the future.

What else do we have planned in the future? So I talked about virtual campus maps and the accessibility experience on our maps earlier. But we're also doing a lot of work right now to improve the user experience for maps, especially, the more complicated maps. Maps that have multiple layers, or what we call seasons that present different views of the map at different times. We're also working very hard to improve your user experience for maps that are both what are called area maps. That are are sort of that not quite top down view that have a to, you know, map of an area with points of interest on it. And also building maps, which we also do maps inside the building, you know, for, you might want to show off a new facility at a school, and we want to make it work so that a student can naturally discover that and can experience that, and really take away good knowledge of of what your campus has to offer. So this is something we're always working on, we have a major push going on right now.

On the VisiTour side, we are adding support for three more languages. Today, VisiTour supports English and Spanish. We're adding French, Mandarin Chinese and Korean. We're-- I think I talked about before around accessibility, we're working to really improve the desktop and the experience away from campus on VisiTour. And finally, what we call our name capture service, which is the service that we use to ask students if they'd like to share their contact information with the school. We're adding support for richer forms, several new form features, we plan there, they will make the forms more responsive and hopefully make them more engaging for students. And also, we're continuously improving the reporting on the name capture service so that we can facilitate more integrations and help schools you know, gather more insight about the students who've identified themselves. So it's a very exciting time Student Bridge, certainly my team has is not going to run out of good work to do. So that's always exciting. And we're growing and I'm looking forward to continuing to deliver industry best solutions in our space for schools, for our partners, so that they can continue to be successful.
